iTunes makes “Friends” along with “Flintstones”

July 25th, 2006 · No Comments

Popular TV series including Friends and the Flintstones are to be offered for download to customers of the iTunes store in the United States.

Warner Brothers has signed an agreement with Apple to sell a selection of its classic shows online.

The first season of Friends will be priced at $1.99 (£1.07) per episode, in line with other programmes on the site.

The comedy’s cast, including Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry, gained global fame when it launched in 1994.

Hanna Barbera cartoon The Jetsons and sci-fi show Babylon 5 are also being made available.

And the previously unseen pilot episode of a TV series based around DC Comics’ Aquaman character is another programme being sold.

Simon Kenny, the president of Warner Brothers Digital Distribution, said the move was “an important step” in making the company’s material available “across the widest selection of platforms and devices”.

Targeting piracy

The announcement comes a month after Warner Brothers said it was joining with online video firm Guba.com to sell its films and TV shows on the internet.

Content was to be offered at prices starting from $1.99 for unlimited viewing during a 24-hour period.

This was seen as being part of the entertainment industry’s attempts to reduce piracy.

Apple revealed last October that it would be selling music videos and television programmes through its iTunes store.

American network ABC was first to sign up, offering Desperate Housewives and Lost to iTunes customers in the US.

Videos can be purchased in many other countries, including the UK, but television output is yet to be made widely available for download via iTunes outside the US.
